چکیده
We present spectroscopy and imaging with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the neutron star RX J1856.5−3754. Little is known about the nature of this source other than that it is a nearby hot neutron star. Our VLT spectrum does not show any strong emission or absorption features. With considerable care to photometric calibration, we obtain photometric measurements over the optical and ultra-violet (UV) using our VLT observations and a detailed analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope data. We find that the entire optical to UV spectral energy distribution is well described by a slightly reddened Rayleigh-Jeans tail (fλ = (2.96± 0.06)× 10 (λ/5000 Å)10λV −1.138) erg s cm Å −1 , where Aλ/AV is the reddening curve; implied V = 25.58±0.02). The reddening is consistent with the interstellar absorption inferred from X-ray spectroscopy. The simplest explanation for this Rayleigh-Jeans emission is that the optical-UV radiation arises from thermal emission from the surface of the neutron star. The high degree to which the data conform to the Rayleigh-Jeans tail significantly limits contributions from other sources of emission. In particular, our observations are inconsistent with the presence of an accretion disk and also strongly constrain the amount of magnetospheric emission from this enigmatic neutron star.

The enigma source, RX J1856.5-3754, is one of the so-called dim thermal neutron stars. Two puzzles of RXJ1856.5-3754 exist: (1) the observational X-ray spectrum is completely featureless; (2) the UV-optical intensity is about seven times larger than that given by the continuation of the blackbody model yielded by the X-ray data. Both the puzzles would not exist anymore if RX J1856.5-3754 is a l...
متن کاملRX J 1856 . 5 - 3754 as a possible Strange Star candidate
RX J1856.5-3754 has been proposed as a strange star candidate due to its very small apparent radius measured from its X-ray thermal spectrum. However, its optical emission requires a much larger radius and thus most of the stellar surface must be cold and undetectable in X-rays. In the case the star is a neutron star such a surface temperature distribution can be explained by the presence of a ...
متن کاملConstraining the geometry of the neutron star RX J 1856 . 5 − 3754
RX J1856.5−3754 is one of the brightest, nearby isolated neutron stars, and considerable observational resources have been devoted to its study. In previous work, we found that our latest models of a magnetic, hydrogen atmosphere matches well the entire spectrum, from X-rays to optical (with best-fitting neutron star radius R ≈ 14 km, gravitational redshift zg ∼ 0.2, and magnetic field B ≈ 4 × ...
متن کاملAstronomy & Astrophysics An unusual H α nebula around the nearby neutron star RX J 1856 . 5 − 3754 ?
We present spectroscopy and Hα imaging of a faint nebula surrounding the X-ray bright, nearby neutron star RX J1856.5−3754. The nebula shows no strong lines other than the hydrogen Balmer lines and has a cometary-like morphology, with the apex being approximately 1′′ ahead of the neutron star, and the tail extending up to at least 25′′ behind it. We find that the current observations can be sat...
